FIG CONGRESS 2002 - CONGRESS DIRECTOR'S REPORT

General

The International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) 2002 Congress is scheduled as a eight day meeting in the Washington D.C. Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, 19-26 April 2002. Both the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) and the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) will also hold meetings during the same week at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel. An exhibit will be held for three days during the Congress, 22-24 April. The overall schedule of the Congress is attached.

Planning for the FIG XXII Congress is well underway. The committee structure is complete and the committee meets on a regular basis. Detailed planning is in work for all events.

Meeting room is available for eight concurrent technical sessions. Three plenary sessions are also planned. The Commissions will have office space available during the entire Congress.

The American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM) and the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) are also planning an extensive technical meeting during the Congress. All FIG Congress attendees will be able to attend any of the ACSM or ASPRS technical sessions. ACSM will also present may special educational workshops that are also included in the basic registration fee. There will be additional fees for some selected workshops sponsored by ASPRS on 20-21 April. The special history session "Surveying and Mapping the Americas" will also have additional fees. Technical and social tours are not included in the registration fees.

The full registration rate includes all technical sessions, the Welcoming Reception, the Exhibitors' Reception, two lunches and the Banquet. All Accompanying Persons registration also includes the social events. Weekly registration does not include the social events.

The Opening Ceremony will include keynote addresses by Dr. Anna Tibaijuka, Executive Director, United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat) and Mr. Jack Dangermond, President of ESRI, the world leader in GIS software. The Call for Papers has been published and is appearing in several journals. The Congress web site "FIG2002.com" has information about the Call for Papers, forms to submit abstracts, and has links to the hotel and Washington area hotels and attractions. Details about the Congress Prize are recently announced.

The Washington D.C. Marriott Wardman Park Hotel will be the Congress venue. Special conference rates that start at $199 per night are now available. If it is not convenient for you to stay in the Congress Hotel, Washington D.C. has a full range of hotels from five-star luxury to basic available to visitors. Excellent travel packages are often available through your travel agent. Hotels adjacent to the Red Metro line will provide easy access to the Congress.
